  	Obituary for Irene G. Sniffin Irene Gwendolyn Sniffin, born Feb. 15, 1930, passed away peacefully at home on May 15. Irene was the beloved wife (widow) of Arthur. She was a loving and supportive mother of Megan (Todd), Andrew (Julie), Todd (Ondine) and grandmother of David, Jane, Sophia, and Olivia. Irene was the devoted daughter of Adelaide [Aanonsen] and Carl Birnstill. After spending some years at Queens College, Flushing, NY., she was a statistical Vari-typist at the Celanese Corporation and a Vari-typist at the National Broadcasting Company. In 1975, she began a decades-long association with the Huntington Historical Society (HHS) as a volunteer and library assistant. Irene indexed, abstracted, collated, typed, and proof-read the HHS publication of four volumes of The Index to the Long-Islander, 1839-1862. The first in her family to publish, she authored the article, “Newspapers – A Study of a Genealogical Source” for the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (September 1980). She indexed Henry Lloyd’s Salt Box Manor House in 1982 for the Lloyd Harbor Historical Society. After many years of intense study on genealogical research methods, along with Arthur, she helped organize HHS genealogy workshops. In 2008, honored as Volunteer of the Year by HHS and together with Arthur, she received a Suffolk County proclamation in recognition of the President’s Award for Service, HHS. Irene loved ballet and tap dancing. Her embroidery and crewel work were accomplished. She was an avid reader of English and Scandinavian mysteries. She loved the challenge of tracing the history of her Norwegian and German ancestors. Irene swung to the music of Benny Goodman and sang along with Frank Sinatra (who would occasionally sit across the counter from her at the NBC cafeteria). In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Huntington Historical Society, Huntington, NY or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Visitation A.L. Jacobsen Funeral Home, 1380 New York Ave., Huntington Sta., NY, 7-9 PM Tues., May 19 and 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM Wed., May 20. Private cremation.

  	Irene Birnstill Married to Arthur Sniffin, Jr. The marriage of Miss Irene  Gwendolyn Birnstill, daughter of  Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Birnstth,  367 Bebbe Road, Mineola, L. I., to  Arthur Sniffin, Jr., son of Mr.  and Mrs. Arthur Sniffin, 26-25  92nd St., Jackson Heights, L. I.,  took place October 23, 1949, at St.  Paul's Lutheran Church, 129th  St. and 102nd Ave., Richmond  Hill, N. Y. The ceremony was  'performed by Rev. Carl Tobke.  The bride was given in marriage  by her father. Mrs. Robert Hassard of Wantaugh, L. I., was matron of honor.  Other attendants were Miss Wilma  Zeiss and Miss Marigo Sakell, Mr.  Richard Sniffin was his brother's  best man. The ushers-Mr. Richard  Spielman and Mr. James Walker. The bride worn ice blue satin,  ankle length gown, shoulder length  veil and carried a white orchid on  a satin muff. Matron of honor  wore light blue taffeta and bridesmaids wore skipper blue taffeta  and carried old-fashioned bou- quets. The bride and bridesmaids  gowns were made by the bride. The bride attended Queens College for two years after graduating  from Richmond Hill High School.  Having lived in Richmond Hill  until recently moving to Mineola.  The groom is with the Navy, hav- ing graduated from Electronics  School at Great Lakes, Ill., and  Underwater Weapons School, Key  West, Fla., now stationed at New  London, Conn. The couple left for  Niagara Falls, Toronto ; Canada,  on their honeymoon. Open house was held at the  brides home following the ceremony.
